Scope and Contents
This collection contains 10 letters written during the American Civil War by Private Morton Thompson of Company A, 3rd Regiment Massachusetts Infantry to his parents. The letters (1862-1863) are written from Camp Richmond and Camp Jourdan near Newbern, North Carolina and discuss his daily activities and thoughts on the war.

Biographical Note - Morton Thompson
Morton Thompson was born in 1844. During the American Civil War, he enlisted in Company A, 3rd Regiment Massachussetts Infantry on September 23, 1862 for a term of 9 months. He held the rank of private and mustered out June 26, 1863. After the war, Thompson became a bookkeeper and later a "peddler." He married Katie Standish on October 22, 1866 in Halifax, Massachusetts. The couple had a daughted named Gracie Allen on September 21, 1882. Thompson died on October 23, 1893 of pneumonia.
