Richard Stockwell Collection

Richard Edgar Stockwell (1917-1996), son of Ella Stelloh and Arthur Raymond Stockwell, was born on 12 March 1917 in Neillsville, Wisconsin. Stockwell received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1940 and a master’s degree in economics and government from the University of Minnesota in 1946. In 1945, he was accepted as a Neiman Fellow at Harvard. Stockwell began his career in radio at stations in Cincinnati, Cedar Rapids, and Minneapolis. He wrote for Aviation Week, The Wall Street Journal, and numerous other publications. He went on to become a member of the editorial page staff at the Minneapolis Star and later held editorial positions for Aviation Age and American Aviation Publications. In 1956, he wrote a book, Soviet Air Power, about the development of Soviet aviation technology, the organization of the Soviet Air Force, and the key figures who shaped the country’s aviation industry. He was an amateur photographer and toured Russia in 1957 and 1958. Photographs from his Russian travels were featured in a booklet about Soviet life that was published in 1960. He worked for the Avco Corporation in Nashville in the 1960s-1970s and was inducted into the Wings Club as a Golden Eagle member in 1995. Stockwell died in Neillsville, Wisconsin on 5 April 1996.
