Handwritten Book of Poetry
Scope and Contents
This collection contains a bound volume of poems, sonnets, and songs collected from the writings of many famous poetic figures, and handwritten onto the pages of this journal. Written in two separate hands, this journal appears to have been exchanged among two friends who alternately scribed favorite poems. Among those poets included are: Madame la Comtesse de Genlis, Antoine-Vincent Arnault, Guillaume Amfrye de Chaulieu, Robert Lowell, Voltaire, Anacreon.
An inscription on the first page reads, "The most grateful; the most delicate offering that ever was presented as the [---] of affection friendship." Possibly signed [Susan Davies?], dated March 28, 1818. Another inscription (3-4 pages from end) appears to have been written by the same hand, and also is signed "Davies." The final two pages are written by a different hand (in French), and are signed "P. Sylvie [Goucor?]."
