Scope and Contents

This collection contains a promotional pamphlet and 18 photographs from the 1897 Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition that opened May 1, 1897 and closed October 31, 1897 in Nashville, Tennessee.

The promotional pamphlet consists of 48 pages that contain illustrations, photographs, plates, and a map of the exposition grounds. The pamphlet was issued in commemoratino of the 100th Anniversary of the State of Tennessee's admission to the Union. It is stamped "Feb. 23, 1897" on the front.

The 18 original photographs show views of the exposition grounds, the auditorium, the transportation, commerce, agriculture, minerals & forestry buildings, the woman's building, the rialto, and others. Some photographs are stamped "Thuss Photo" on the front.

This collection may be viewed only in the reading room of Special Collections in the Jean and Alexander Heard Library. Historical Note

Several photographs in this collection contain a "Thuss Photo" stamp. William G. Thuss (1854-1943) and his brother Andrew J. Thuss operated a studio at the Centennial Exposition. They took souvenir photographs for fair visitors. William Thuss arrived in Nashville in 1875 and opened a studio with his brother in 1899. He won various awards for his work.
