Scope and Contents
This collection contains the papers of Tom Schulman, screenwriter, author, and Vanderbilt University alumnus. The bulk of the collection currently consists of scripts and supporting documentation from the many films written by Schulman, most dating from 1985-2005.

This collection may be viewed only in the reading room of Special Collections in the Jean and Alexander Heard Library. Biographical / Historical
Thomas H. Schulman (born 1951) is an accomplished American screenwriter who earned an Academy Award winner for the Best Original Screenplay for his work on Dead Poets Society (1989).
Schulman was born in Nashville, TN, and received his BA in philosophy at Vanderbilt University in 1972. He then studied at the University of Southern California’s Graduate School of Cinema.
Schulman’s success came with the screenplay for Dead Poets Society, which not only secured him the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1989 but also earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. Among his other works are such films as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Welcome to Mooseport, What About Bob?, Second Sight, Holy Man, Medicine Man, Indecent Proposal, 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag.
In recognition of his contributions to the world of cinema, Schulman was elected as the vice president of the Writers Guild of America, West, in 2009.
