Biographical / Historical
George Hammond Sullivan was born in New York City on Nov. 20, 1859, to Algernon Sydney Sullivan and Mary Mildred Hammond. Sullivan attended Columbia and Harvard and received an LL. B. degree from Columbia Law School in 1884. He was engaged in a number of philanthropic works alongside his mother, and he was especially interested in promoting education in the South. The Sullivans donated a number of paintings, sculptures, prints, and books to George Peabody College for Teachers in 1913 and 1937. Sullivan died on November 14, 1956.
