Biographical / Historical
Otis McBride was born on August 20, 1905. He received a BA from North Texas State Teachers College and then taught English in Texas and Oklahoma. He went on to complete an MA in English at Peabody College in 1931 and a PhD there in 1941. He published “Thomas Hood and His Poetry” and “The Teaching of English in the Southern Antebellum Academy” during his time at Peabody. He married Catherine Hess, a fellow Peabody graduate, while living in Nashville. During World War II, he served in the army air corps and was stationed in North Africa for several months. In 1946, he became the Dean of Men at Florida State University, and he became the director of the FSU Audiovisual Service in 1953. He was a significant member of the Peabody Alumni Association and edited the Peabody Reflector for many years. McBride died in Boulder, Colorado, on March 17, 1985.
