Scope and Contents

The Isabel Howell Papers focus on Isabel Howell (1900-1976), who served as a librarian at Vanderbilt University from 1931 to 1939, as well as at the Tennessee State Library and Archives, and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. The collection spans a wide timeframe, from 1843 to 1976, and comprises 9.88 ln. feet of material.

The collection is organized into three series. The first series is the Correspondence series, which constitutes the majority of the collection. Within this series, the materials are divided into two sub-series. The Outgoing sub-series contains professional and personal letters written by Isabel Howell. The Other sub-series comprises letters addressed to Isabel Howell, as well as correspondence between other personalities.

The second series is titled Sheet Music, and consists of two boxes of sheet music from the late 19th to the early 20th century.

The Writing series includes articles, papers, notes, photographs, essays, book reviews, poetry and other materials written by Howell and other authors.

The physical materials from this collection may be viewed only in the reading room of Vanderbilt’s Special Collections and University Archives.
