One day, Christopher was helping a small child cross the river when the river rose suddenly and the child's weight grew much heavier. Through great perseverance the two made it across, once safely on the other side Christopher asked the child why he was so heavy. The child replied that he was Christ and carried the world on his shoulders before disappearing. Thus the saint was christened with the name Christopher, the "Christ-bearer" and patron saint of travelers.
