Fray Jose Sigüenza, The sitter is one of the Order of Saint Jerome. He was an expert in Arabic and a counselor to Philip II of Spain, and also the librarian to the monastery of El Escorial in Madrid. This library still owns the original of this work; copies such as this exist elsewhere. The artist assisted Federico Zuccaro in the decoration of the cloister at El Escorial. His stylistic qualities here are shown, with the naturalism and realistic detail of seventeenth-century Spanish painting. (VADS)
