Saints Peter and Paul, These two saints have long been associated with each other since the beginning of Christian paintings and sculpture. Peter, on the left, is traditionally shown as the older of the two; in this painting, he is shown reading out of a book. Paul, on the right, is traditionally rendered younger; here, he holds a sword and a closed book. Often, Peter is depicted as a soldier and Paul as a philosopher, but here those types are less defined. Behind them is a landscape, and in small form under the horizon line, there are allusive illustrations to when Christ called each of them, respectively. Peter's, on the far left, is Jesus calling him when he was a fisherman. Paul is shown thrown off of his horse when he saw the vision of Christ. This is a basic record created to enable public access to scanned images. Full research on this image is pending.
