The Penitent Magdalene, Painting depicts the Renaissance archetype of the Penitent Mary. This apocryphal story that follows Mary Magdalene after the death of Jesus. It was said that she then retired with all of her possessions, goods, and only the clothes on her back to live a life of exile and repentance. Here, she appears outdoors at night. A rich god fabrics appears around her as a cloak while she leans on a weaved basket with her hands clasped in prayer. Though her clothes have disintegrated with time and her hair is covering her chest strategically. She is surrounded by articles of the faith, a bible, a vanitas skull. a crucifixion and a jar with liquid in it, presumably for the oil used to anoint the feet of Jesus, an attribute to another woman she is often combined with.
