Polyptych: Saint Bernardino of Siena, This image shows a detail of a two-tiered polyptych from Santa Eufemia in Rab, Croatia. In this detail, the central panel of the lower tier is shown, along with a partial view of the panel to each side of this central panel. In the central panel, Saint Bernardino wearing a monastic habit, holds a book in one hand and holds out a circular tablet in the other. The tablet was probably originally inscribed "IHS," an abbreviation for the name of Christ. Seen almost in whole on the left side of this image, is the panel of Saint Francis. He holds a book and a cross and wears a Franciscan habit. To the right of the central panel and almost seen in whole here, Saint Christopher is shown making an ascent up a rocky terrain, while he holds the Christ Child on his shoulder and steadies himself with a walking stick. The Christ Child holds an orb. Also apparent in this image are the intricacies of the carved and gilded wood frame, which shows heavy influence of the late Gothic period style.
