Standing, to the left of the Virgin and Christ are St. Peter, holding the keys to heaven, and St. Bridget of Sweden holding her pilgrim's staff. To the right of the Virgin and Christ stand St. Andrew, with his X-shaped cross, and St. Agnes, with her lamb. Golgotha and the other crucified criminals can be seen in the background., c.1520

Scope and Contents

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.GERM.0048; Public Notes: The choice to depict St. Bridget was common at the time, because of her widely famous publication of her "Celestial Visions" in the 14th century. St. Agnes was also a highly en vogue saint during the period of this piece's creation and she serves to augment the Virgin Mary's purity.
