A Young Woman and her Son, Portrait of a young woman holding a child in her lap. Both the mother and the child look directly at the viewer. The mother is depicted wearing an ornate golden dress with a large ruff while her son wears a red valhoed (or protective hat), a cross necklace, a heavy chain across his chest, and a long, close-fitting coat. He holds his mother's feather fan in his hands.
Scope and Contents
Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.FLEM.0822; Public Notes: There has been much speculation surrounding the identity of the sitters. Scholars have considered her as the wife of Rockox, Adriana Perez, Batthazarine van Linnick, and her sons Adriaan van Heedtvelde (as does our photograph). However, there is no evidence that these propositions are accurate. Among the existing portraits of men, it is most likely that this piece is the pendant to Van Dyck's "Portrait of a Man" in the Royal Collection (panel: 123.2 x 92.7).
