Hermes, Herse and Aglauros, Painting depicts the mythological scene of Hermes turning Aglauros to stone. Hermes, the messenger of the gods, falls in love with Herse, an Athenian princess. Her sister Aglauros had served as a go between the two lovers. One day, her envy had become too much and she refused to allow Hermes to see her sister. She vowed not to move until Hermes left, to which turns her to stone. Hermes is shown in partial dress with his helmet and staff, Aglauros is seen at his feet being struck by his staff. Herse is seen sitting, partially exposed, reading with a small dog at her feet.
