Saint Ambrose Polyptych: Saint Ambrose and Saint Peter, This image is a detail from the larger St. Ambrose Polyptych. Seen in this detail is St. Ambrose in the center panel, and St. Peter in the panel on the left. St. Peter holds a book and the keys to the Kingdom. St. Ambrose holds one hand up in blessing and holds a crosier in the other hand. He wears a mitre, a stole, and a simar. Below his throne is a grouping of the members of the confraternity who commissioned the polyptych., 1477
Scope and Contents
Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.VENI.0292; Public Notes: The work was made for the Scuola dei Tagliapietra a S. Aponal., In 1838, it was removed and sent to Vienna. After WWI, it returned to Venice to be placed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia.
