Scope and Contents

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.SCUL.0356; Public Notes: The Orti San Michaelis or Orsanmichele was rebuilt in the 14th century to replace Florence's crumbling market infrastructure, the building was to house a market and a meeting place for the various guilds, who were each given a niche outside the building. Donatello produced the statue of Saint George under the commission of the guild of armorers and swordmakers. Today, Saint George is housed at the national museum of Saint George in Florence.
