Biographical / Historical

(1887-1977) tenor and composer. Graduate of Fisk. Hayes erformed with the Fisk Jubilee Singers on a tour to Boston and remained in the city. He developed a successful career as a recitalist and then toured Europe. He was known as an interpreter of Spirituals, which he referred to as "Aframerican religious folk music").
