Biographical / Historical
(1917-1996) jazz singer. Fitzgerald began performing at an early age and started her jazz career with Chick Webb, whose band she went on to lead after his untimely passing in 1939. She performed with Dizzy Gillespie in the 1940s and adapted quickly to the bebop style. Her collaborations with Norman Granz marked a turning point in her career, in that she performed at more prestigious venues nationally and internationally and gained a greater degree of agency in her recordings. She toured and recorded most heavily from the 1950s through the early 1980s. (Source: Perea 2015, Oxford Music Online)
