Biographical / Historical
(1907-1994) popular and jazz singer and bandleader. Calloway grew up in Baltimore. He began his career in Chicago. Then in New York, he led two bands that played at the Cotton Club in Harlem and was one of the most successful bandleaders of the 1930s and 1940s. Leading the house band at that Cotton Club band, he toured Europe, appeared in films, and recorded. After the group disbanded in 1948, Calloway went on to appear in musical theatre. He continued to work into the 1980s, appearing on TV and in movies. He composed many of the songs his bands played, was famous for his scat singing, and promoted the careers of Chu Berry, Ben Webster, and Dizzy Gillespie. (Source: Hosiasson 2001, Oxford Music Online)
