Biographical / Historical
(1913-1972) composer, pianist, and teacher. Bonds learned piano from her mother and composed her first work Marquette Street Blues at the age of five. Price studied composition with Margaret Price and William Levi Dawson. She earned degrees from Northwestern. Bonds later moved to New York City and studied piano at Juilliard. Bonds best known works are spirituals for solo voice and / or chorus but she also wrote several works for musical theatre. She collaborated with Andy Razaf and Langston Hughes.
