Biographical / Historical
(1918-1990) jazz and popular singer. Sang with Noble Sissle's band in the 1930 and with Cootie Williams, Count Basie, and Cab Calloway in the 1940s. She went on to Broadway where she won awards and eventually to film roles. One of her best remembered screen roles was in St. Louis Blues (1958). [related collection] She retired in 1976 to serve at the UN. She was married to jazz drummer, Louis Bellson.
