The Society of Phantom Friends Newsletter: Halloween Issue, 1985 October 14
Scope and Contents
This series contains material related to the activities of the Society of Phantom Friends and its members. Originally called the Judy Bolton Soceity and organized around May 1985 by Blanche Reinhardt, with Margaret Sutton as the honorary president, the fan club and its newsletter began with a focus on Judy Bolton. Due to the broader interests of the initial group of members, the club soon expanded its focus to include other girls' series books and changed its name to the Society of Phantom Friends, led by president Kate Emberg (née Hohenberger).
The Society of Phantom Friends circulated letters to its members as well as a periodic newsletter/journal, The Whispered Watchword, which contained articles, quizzes, annoucements, trivia, and other pieces on various subjects related to Judy Bolton, Nancy Drew, and other girls' series fiction.
This series also includes Judy Bolton fanfiction: a typescript of the first three chapters and the final published copy of The Whispering Belltower, a Judy Bolton mystery written by Kate Emberg with Margaret Sutton's permission and blessing, and a photocopy of Discovering the Puzzling Phantom Trail of the Cat’s Secret Clue by Linda Joy Singleton, which imagines Judy Bolton's childhood. Singleton would go on to co-author The Talking Snowman with Margaret Sutton.
