Fisk Student Interviews about Experiences in Jail, Friday Night Fellowship Songs, 1964 May
Scope and Contents
This tape includes an interview with four students who, while participating in an exchange program at Fisk University, took part in the May 1964 non-violent protests at Morrison's Cafeteria, a segregated restaurant at 1720 West End Avenue in Nashville, TN. The students and several other protestors were arrested with "John Doe" and "Jane Doe" arrest warrants. In this interview, they describe spending the weekend in jail, where they kept up morale by singing Freedom Songs. In the later part of the recording, they sing several songs, including "Midnight Special," "Gotta Travel On," "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho," "Zum Gali Gali," "Michael Roll the Boat Ashore," "Hey Lolly Lolly," "Oleanna," "Sinner Man," "When I First Came to This Land," "Everybody Talkin Bout Heaven," "Down by the Riverside," and "We Shall Overcome."
