Series III: Books, 1992 - 2003

This series contains 19 boxes in four subseries, arranged chronologically by publication date. The manuscript versions could not all be arranged chronologically because of insufficient information, but they are arranged in estimated chronological order.

The Search for Justice [1968-1972] This 2-box subseries contains several manuscripts and partial manuscripts, notes, [clippings and wire reports], correspondence and two photographs regarding Squires’ contribution to former Tennessean editor John Seigenthaler’s book. Squires covered the search for and trial of James Earl Ray, who plead guilty to killing Martin Luther King in 1968.

Read All About It! ([1990]-1992) This 5-box subseries contains several manuscripts, galleys, notes, correspondence, and newspaper clippings and publications. Notable correspondents include former Washington Post executive editor Benjamin Bradlee. Copies of the book, including a proof copy and a Spanish translation have been removed and shelved with the Southern Civilization collection.

The Secrets of the Hopewell Box ([1994]-1996) This 4-box subseries contains several folders of notes, text of Squires’ speeches, two-and-a-half boxes of articles and notes on the different people and events covered by the book, correspondence, draft peripheral copy for the book (index, dedication, etc.), and reproduced photographs from 1940s-1960s Nashville and the negatives. Tapes of interviews with several people, including Maude Robinson, Judge Maude Robinson, Gale Robinson and Jake Sheridan, Jr. have been placed in Series VI, along with 3 ½-inch floppy diskettes containing the manuscript.

Horse of a Different Color (1995-2003; bulk 2001-2002) This 8-box subseries contains several versions of the manuscript, some with editorial notes and corrections, as well as handwritten notes for the book. The correspondence is limited, but includes a note from playwright Sam Shephard. The majority of the series is made up of research material, mainly articles, arranged by subject. An audiotape version of the book read by Squires is in Series VI, and three copies of the book have been removed and shelved with the Southern Civilization collection.
