Biography

Randall Jarrell was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 6, 1914, to Owen and Anna Campbell Jarrell. When he was a child, he and his parents lived and traveled along the West Coast of the United States. After his parents separated when he was 11, his mother took him back to Nashville, where he went on to attend Hume-Fogg High School. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Vanderbilt University, where he studied under John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, and Robert Penn Warren. After completing his M.A. in English at Vanderbilt, Jarrell followed John Crowe Ransom to Kenyon College, where both men taught English. Jarrell joined the Air Force during World War II, an experience which greatly influenced his poetry. Jarrell’s teaching positions included professorships at the University of Texas, Sarah Lawrence College, the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He published several volumes of poetry and criticism, including Poetry and the Age (1953). He died in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1965.

Scope and Content Note From the Collection: The Papers of Peter Taylor (1917-1994), writer, educator and former Vanderbilt student (1936-1937), were acquired by the Jean and Alexander Heard Library during the summer of 1988 from Collector Stuart T.
