Hercules and Antaeus, This is a watercolor depicting Hercules's defeat over Antaeus, the son of Poseidon and Gaia. According to Greek mythology, Anataeus was an unprecedentedly strong half-giant who would challenge passersby to wrestling matches. As long as he was in contact with the ground, he could not be defeated. Hercules, upon encountering him, realized this necessary connection to the Earth (given his mother) and defeated Antaeus by lifting him into the air and crushing him via bear-hug., c. 1530
