Eton College, The school is here shown from the east; it is viewed from across the river Thames. The general position of the chapel appears as it would be seen from this direction, but many of the other details of the buildings are invented. The painting is dated on grounds of style. Canaletto was staying nearby at Windsor in 1747, but this seems to be a later work., 1754

Merchants at the River, Pictured are many merchants along a river in what appears to be Venice (although may be London). The waterway is busy in addition to the docks next to the tall buildings that line the shoreline.

The Stonemason's Yard, he Stonemason's Yard' is considered one of Canaletto's finest works. The view is one across the Campo (small square) S. Vidal, looking over the Grand Canal to the church of S. Maria della Carita (Saint Mary of Charity). The square has been temporarily transformed into a workshop for repairing the nearby church (not seen in the picture) of S. Vidal. The blocks of Istrian stone were brought by water to the square. The 'campanile' (bell-tower) of the church of S. Maria della Carita on the far side of the Grand Canal collapsed in 1744, after the painting was made, and was not rebuilt.The painting is not precisely datable but the bold composition, the densely applied paint and the careful execution of the figures are characteristic of Canaletto's works of the mid- to late 1720s. The informal nature of the scene and the unusual view across the Grand Canal suggest that it was made for a local Venetian patron rather than a foreign visitor to Venice., 1725

Venice: Piazza San Marco and the Colonnade of the Procuratie Nuove, This is a view of S. Marco and the campanile from beneath the colonnade of the Procuratie Nuove on the south side of the piazza. One of the figures in the foreground is holding a cup and saucer; nearby (but out of the picture) is the site of the famous Cafe Florian, a well-known centre of Venetian social life. This painting is a pendant to 'Venice: Piazza San Marco'. The pair are dated on stylistic grounds to about 1756, after Canaletto's final return to Venice. A number of preparatory drawings survive that can be related to this picture (Windsor, Royal Collection; and David Villiers collection; formerly the Reverly collection). These works show compositions which extend further to the left than that of the painting. Additional studies of the figure group include a work in New York (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lehman Collection), and a drawing formerly in the National Gallery, but now transferred to the British Museum., 1756

Venice: Piazza San Marco, This work and its companion painting 'Piazza San Marco and the Colonnade of the Procuratie Nuove' are late works by Canaletto depicting views of the basilica of San Marco from either side of the main piazza. This picture shows the basilica framed by the pillars of an arcade to the west of the Piazza.The man standing on the right is holding a cup and saucer. Florian's, one of the most famous cafes in the Piazza, is nearby. Probably painted, with its pendant 'Piazza San Marco and the Colonnade', in the late 1750s after Canaletto's return from England., 1758

Venice: The Basin of San Marco on Ascension Day, The painting shows a view towards the Doge's Palace on the right, with Santa Maria della Salute and the entrance to the Grand Canal on the left. The annual ceremony of the Wedding of the Sea is about to take place. The official procession is making its way from the Doge's Palace to the state barge, the 'Bucintoro', and the Doge's ceremonial umbrella is just visible in the crowd. The Doge will drop a gold ring from the barge to symbolise the marriage of Venice to the sea. The arms of the Doge Alvise Pisani, who ruled from 1735-41 are visible on the 'Bucintoro'. These details and stylistic considerations give the approximate date for the work. This work and its companion piece, 'A Regatta on the Grand Canal', are among the grandest views of Venice that Canaletto made for the many wealthy visitors who flocked to see the city and to witness the impressive public ceremonies held on the Grand Canal., 1740

Venice: The Feast Day of Saint Roch, In Venice the feast day of Saint Roch on 16 August commemorated the end of the terrible plague of 1576 (in which Titian died). On this day the Doge would hear mass in San Rocco where Saint Roch was buried, to celebrate his intercession in bringing the plague to an end. Canaletto's painting shows the grand procession of state dignitaries and ambassadors emerging from the church. The participants all carry nosegays, which were presented to them on arrival as a memorial of the plague. The Doge carries a parasol and wears gold and ermine ceremonial robes. Awnings give protection from the sun. An exhibition of paintings was traditionally held at the Scuola di San Rocco, which dominates this painting, on Saint Roch's feast day. The pictures decorating the Scuola here have not been identified., 1735
