His mother, Myrrha, had an incestuous relationship with her father and in order to escape death, she fled. The gods took pity on her and turned her into a Myrrh tree., c. 1505-1510

The piece was once part of the collection of Sir Alfred Mond, 1st Baron Melchett of Landford, South Hampton at Melchett Court, Romsey, Hampshire and was then passed on after his death in 1930 to Sir Henry Ludwig Mond, 2nd Baron Melchett of Landford, South Hampton at the Colworth House in Sharnbrook, Bedshire.

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.TITI.0112; Public Notes: This piece was finished by Titian after the premature death of Giorgione. The painting is part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection, number 475. On the back of the photograph, it states that this painting once belonged to Henry Doetsch (c. 1886-1895) and Henry Goldman (1920-c.1926)
