Saint Eligius, Statue of Saint Eligius, the 7th century bishop of Noyon and Tournai within an elaborate niche outside the Orsanmichele in Florence. Saint Eligius stands in his bishop vestments, mitre and crosier. Like the other statues outside the Orsanmichele, his feet are slights akimbo with his left foot slightly forward. He holds a book in his left hand, likely a bible., ca. 1420, Photographed in 2309
Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.SCUL.0391; Public Notes: The Orti San Michaelis or Orsanmichele was built in the 14th century to replace Florence's crumbling market infrastructure, the building was to house a market and a meeting place for the various guilds, who were each given a niche outside the building. Nanni di Banco produced the statue of Saint Eligius under the commission of the Guild of Blacksmiths.
