Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.FLEM.0444; Public Notes: This is considered to be one of Memling's most famous portraits. The coin our sitter holds dates between 64 or 65 and late 66 A.D. The inclusion of this particular coin could signify the sitter's status, recognizing him as a knowledgeable humanist and connoisseur of ancient coins. There has been much speculation over the sitter's identity, however he remains unknown.
