Portait of a Young Woman, This painting is a portrait of an unknown young woman. She sits in three-quarter's view looking at something outside of the picture plane. She wears a white fur collar and a variety of jewelry, with a pendant hanging from a necklace at her neck and seven golden rings on her fingers. On her head, she wears a hair cap and a sheer veil., c.1480

Scope and Contents Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.FLEM.0442; Public Notes: It has been speculated that the sitter is Marie Moreel, although this cannot be proven. The sitter's dress suggests that she is a member of a wealthy family and it also supports the proposed dating of the piece. It should also be noted that the sitter rests her hands on the lower part of the frame and two of her fingertips are actually painted on the frame itself, creating the illusion that the sitter is projecting into the...

St. Veronica, This painting is a depiction of St. Veronica holding a veil bearing the image of Christ's face. According to Catholic tradition, St. Veronica gave Christ her veil when she saw Jesus carrying his cross to Golgotha. She offered it to him so that he could wipe the sweat from his forehead. When he returned the veil to her, his face had miraculously been impressed upon it. Here Veronica sits in three-quarter's view in a landscape with the river Jordan running behind her., 1479

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.FLEM.0439; Public Notes: This painting is the right exterior panel of a triptych known as the "Triptych of Jan Florain." Each exterior panel is framed by elaborately painted arches depicting scenes of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden after the fall of man and before their subsequent expulsion.
