San Marziale in Glory with Saint Peter and Saint Paul (detail), Painting depicts San Marziale, or Saint Martial, a third century bishop of Limoges, known to have evangelized France. He appears here as an older man in a white floor length garment elevated on the clouds, his arms outstretched, gazing skyward. To his right an angel holds a staff and on his right a papal headpiece, both attributes of his later, disproved saint attributes. Above him the clouded sky is full of angels and a dove descends upon him. At his feet sit the mature depictions of Saint Peter and Saint Paul both holding books and glancing toward the scene.
