Praglia Polyptych, This image shows a polyptych with two tiers. The original gothic frame was lost when the work was moved to the Brera in 1811. In the central panel of the lower tier, the Virgin is enthroned with the Christ Child sitting on a pillow in her lap. He gives the sign of blessing. The Virgin holds a church model in her right hand. At her right foot is a small kneeling donor, identified as Abbot Cipriano Rinaldini. In the central panel of the upper tier is a pieta, with Mary and John surrounding and supporting the Dead Christ. His stigmata are visible, and they all stand behind a parapet. In each tier, there are three saints pictured to each side of each of the central scenes. In the bottom tier, saints are pictured in full-length figure. To the right of the central panel in the bottom tier are Ss. Augustine, Benedict, and John the Baptist. To the right of the central panel in the bottom tier are Ss. Jerome, Bruno or Bernard, and Prosdocimus. St Augustine wears a Benedictine habit, and holds a book and a crosier. St. Benedict wears a Benedictine habit, and holds a book and a crosier. St. John the Baptist wears animal skins, holds a cross, and points toward the Christ Child, telling of his coming. On the right side panels of the lower tier, St. Jerome wears robes and gazes down, reading an open book he is holding. The figure of St. Bruno or St. Bernard wears a light colored monastic habit, and holds a book and a crosier. St. Prosdocimus wears bishop's vestments including a mitre, and holds a crosier and a jar. He was the first bishop of Padua and his tomb is situated at the basilica of Santa Giustina at Padua. He is thought to be a spiritual father to St. Giustina of Padua, who is pictured in the panel above his in the upper tier. In the upper tier, saints are pictured in three-quarter figure length. To the left of the upper tier central panel are Ss. Scholastica, Gregory, and Peter. To the right of the upper central panel are Ss. Paul, Ambrose, and Giustina. St. Scholastica wears a habit of her Order and holds a dove, rosary beads, and a book. St. Gregory wears a bishop's vestments including a mitre, and holds a cross and a book, while a dove whispers into his ear. St. Peter wears a tunic and robe, and holds a book and the key to the Kingdom. St. Paul wears a tunic and robe and holds a sword and a book. St. Ambrose wears bishop's vestments including a mitre, and holds an open book, a crosier, and a scourge.
