Saint Jerome and the Lion, The artist renders Saint Jerome removing a thorn from the paw of a lion. The two are presumably within Jerome's study, due to the shelves surrounding him filled with books and the open Bible at his podium, a signifier of his translating the Bible into "vulgar" or common language. Another visual attribution of the saint is his red had on the table behind the lion, this hat is often depicted on the saint and shows his church office.
