Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.DUTC.0675; Public Notes: From the Mauritshuis museum: Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer’s most famous painting. It is not a portrait, but a ‘tronie’ – a painting of an imaginary figure. Tronies depict a certain type or character; in this case a girl in exotic dress, wearing an oriental turban and an improbably large pearl in her ear.

Triumphant Rome, In this painting, the personification of Rome sits enthroned in the center of the composition. Her right hand holds a tiny statuette of Victory while her left hand holds the hilt of a short sword and rests on an orb. To the right is a genius of Victory holding a crown above her head. Constantine who stands holding a thunderbolt is accompanied by an eagle and three nude prisoners. To the left are two bound noble captives and the shewolf who nurses Romulus and Remus in the foreground., c.1622

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.DUTC.0636; Public Notes: From Mauritshuis: Ter Borch’s oeuvre consists largely of intimate paintings of people absorbed in what they are doing. This woman writing a letter is the first of a whole series and was an example for other artists, like Vermeer.
