The Lady with a Fan, Standing portrait of a lady in black dress and veil, holds a rosary and a fan. This painting is one of Velasquez' most famous and the sitter has been under much speculation. Sometimes titled A Spanish Lady (as the photographer Anderson has done here) but some scholars suggest the woman is actually French and the only Frenchwoman known to have been painted is Duchess of Chevreuse. Suggesting this portrait was a commissiond court portrait., circa 1640
