The panel has been cut down at the top left and right corners. A drawing, possibly at the Louvre in Paris, may contain the original composition. The painting was once part of the Franz Koenigs Collection in Haarlem, The Netherlands.

The model for the lady spinning with a dog on her lap was Wiesken Matthys, the artist’s stepmother. This work celebrates the virtuous housewife.
